No. A UAE free zone trade license lets a company operate; it does not by itself make anyone a resident. Residence comes from a separate immigration process: the company needs an establishment card and a visa allocation, and each person then goes through an entry permit, a medical fitness test, Emirates ID biometrics and the residence permit itself.

Why a license and a residence visa are two different things
A free zone authority issues the trade license. The residence permit is issued by the federal immigration authority, ICP, or by the emirate-level directorate (for example GDRFA in Dubai). The license is one of the documents the immigration authority looks at — alongside the establishment card, the partnership documents, the medical report and health insurance — but it is not a decision on your residence.
In practice, this means three things:
- The company must be registered with immigration. ICP issues an electronic establishment card that records the trade name, license number, partners and activity. A valid trade license is a condition, and free zone companies apply through their own free zone authority (ICP, Issuing an Establishment Card).
- The company must have room in its visa allocation. How many residence visas a free zone company can sponsor is set by the free zone and usually depends on the facility you lease.
- Each person is assessed individually. Passport validity, the medical fitness result and security checks apply to every applicant. A license, even a paid-up one, does not override these.
ICP lists free zone employment as one category of its residency permit service, with trade licenses and establishment cards among the documents (ICP, Issuing Residency Permit). Approval is the authority's decision, not a feature of the package you buy.
Visa allocation: how the package decides how many visas you get
Most free zones link the number of residence visas a company may sponsor to its office solution. The figures are set by each zone and change over time, so treat any number as an example rather than a rule.
As one published example, the DMCC free zone in Dubai states that a flexi desk allows up to 3 visas, a serviced office 4 or 5 depending on size, and physical space 1 visa for every 9 square meters (DMCC, types of free zone visas, March 2026). Other zones use their own formulas; some packages include no visa allocation at all.
Questions to ask before you pay
- How many visas are included in the package, and can the allocation be increased later without moving to a larger office?
- Is the establishment card (immigration file) included, or is it a separate step and fee?
- Does the package cover only the license, or also the entry permit, medical test, Emirates ID and health insurance?

Investor or partner visa vs employee visa
A free zone company can usually sponsor two kinds of residence for the people behind it:
- Partner or investor visa — for shareholders named in the company's documents. Free zones set their own conditions. DMCC, for example, publishes a partner or investor visa that requires a minimum of 50 shares with total share capital of AED 50,000 and is valid for three years (DMCC). Other zones set different terms.
- Employment visa — for staff, including an owner who is registered as an employee (for example, as manager) of their own company. The company is the sponsor and holds the file.
Separately, there is a federal Green Residency for investors and partners: a renewable five-year residence without an employer sponsor, for people who can prove an investment or contribution to a UAE business and hold the necessary licenses and approvals (ICP, UAE Green Residency). In Dubai, GDRFA lists a partnership agreement or investment contract and the trade license among the documents for this permit (GDRFA, Green residence permit — partner investor). Eligibility is assessed case by case; a small license alone should not be assumed to qualify.
The visa type determines who can cancel it, which grace period applies and what you must do to leave cleanly — for a partner visa, cancellation may be linked to the company or your shareholding. Ask the free zone how cancellation works for your visa type before you apply.
Step by step: from license to Emirates ID
- License issued by the free zone, with the correct activity.
- Establishment card issued through the free zone authority. ICP lists a processing time of 2 days once the application is complete (ICP).
- Entry permit requested by the company as sponsor. If you are abroad, you enter the UAE on it; if you are already in the country on another status, you apply for a change of status instead.
- Medical fitness test — required for residence visa applicants aged 18 and over; it is a separate procedure and does not replace health insurance (EHS, medical fitness for residency; u.ae, general provisions).
- Emirates ID biometrics — fingerprints and photo at a service center. ICP requires fingerprinting for applicants aged 15 and over (ICP, Identity Card Renewal).
- Residence permit issued and linked to the Emirates ID. Valid health insurance is among the required documents.
How long it takes
There is no single official end-to-end timeline for free zone residence. Individual services have published processing times: ICP lists 2 days for issuing a residency permit and for an establishment card, and GDRFA lists 48 hours for the green partner-investor permit (ICP; GDRFA). The overall duration depends on the free zone, medical appointments and security review. ICP also requires residence procedures to be completed within 60 days of entering the UAE (ICP) — plan travel so that you are available for the medical test and biometrics.
What happens if the license lapses or is not renewed
Your residence depends on the company that sponsors it. ICP states that all residence issuance requirements must be maintained when applying for renewal, so a residence permit cannot be renewed on the basis of a company whose license or immigration file is no longer valid (ICP, Renewal of residency permits).
When a residence permit expires or is canceled, a grace period applies before overstay fines start. ICP publishes different periods by category:
Source: ICP, Renewal of residency permits. After the grace period, a fine of AED 50 per day of overstay applies. Which row covers a particular free zone partner or employee visa is not always obvious from the category name — confirm it with the issuing authority when the visa is canceled rather than assuming the longest period.
The six-month rule
Under the general provisions, a resident who stays outside the UAE for more than 180 days continuously has their residence visa nullified automatically, with exceptions for certain groups such as residents abroad for treatment or study (u.ae). Golden Visa holders are not affected by this rule in the same way (u.ae, Golden visa).
Family sponsorship and bank accounts
Family. For standard family sponsorship, ICP requires a monthly income of at least AED 4,000, or AED 3,000 with housing provided by the employer, plus suitable accommodation. The family route covers a spouse, unmarried daughters, sons under 25 and children with special needs, and the family permit cannot run longer than the sponsor's own (ICP, Issuing Residency Permit). For a company owner, decide in advance how income will be evidenced. Green Residency holders can sponsor a spouse and children under the program's own rules (ICP).
Bank accounts. A license and a residence visa are prerequisites that banks look at, not a right to an account. Banks run their own compliance review of the company and the owner: what the business actually does, where the money comes from, who the clients are and whether the license activity matches. An account may be refused even when the visa is issued, so treat banking as a separate project.
Tax registration. A new UAE legal entity, including a free zone company, established on or after 1 March 2024 must register for corporate tax within 3 months of incorporation, even if no tax is payable (FTA, corporate tax bulletin).
What it costs
License and office fees are set by each free zone and vary widely; the table lists only official federal and emirate immigration fees that are published. Package totals are covered in the cost review linked above.
Who this is for — and who it is not for
A free zone company with a visa suits you if:
- you have a real business activity that fits a free zone license and clients you can document;
- you plan to live in the UAE for a substantial part of the year;
- you are ready to maintain the license, office, establishment card, tax registration and insurance every year;
It is probably not the right route if:
- you only need a "backup" residence and will be abroad for more than six months at a time;
- you expect a guaranteed bank account or tax residency certificate as part of the package;
- you would be employed by a UAE company anyway — then the employer sponsors your visa;
- you qualify for a route without a company, such as Green Residency as a skilled worker or freelancer, or a Golden Visa — compare these first.
Common mistakes and reasons for refusal
- Buying a license-only package. Some packages include no visa allocation; adding one later can mean upgrading the office.
- Wrong license activity. An activity that does not match what you actually do causes questions at the bank and at renewal.
- Passport validity. ICP requires at least six months (ICP).
- Medical fitness result. A person declared medically unfit cannot complete the residence process; if you have a known medical history, discuss it before paying for the license.
- Security review delays. Files can sit "under review" with no published deadline; avoid irreversible plans tied to a date.
- Letting the license lapse. Renewal of the visa requires that the issuing conditions still hold; a late license renewal can push the visa into the grace period and overstay fines.
- Leaving without canceling. Partner and employee visas have to be canceled by the sponsor; departing with open files, an active company or unpaid fees creates problems at exit and on return.
The cost of an error is usually time — a repeated application, a second medical, lost weeks — as well as fees. Professional support is optional; what matters is that the sequence is checked before fees become non-refundable.

No. The license allows the company to operate. Residence requires an establishment card, a free visa slot in the company's allocation, an entry permit or change of status, a medical fitness test, Emirates ID biometrics and approval by the immigration authority (ICP).
It depends on the free zone and the office solution. As one example, DMCC publishes up to 3 visas for a flexi desk, 4 or 5 for a serviced office and 1 per 9 square meters of physical space (DMCC). Other zones use different rules, so confirm the allocation in writing before paying.
Residence renewal requires that the original issuing conditions are still met, so an expired license blocks renewal (ICP). Once a permit expires or is canceled, a grace period applies — from 30 to 180 days depending on the category — and then overstay fines of AED 50 per day.
Yes, if you meet the family sponsorship conditions: ICP requires a monthly income of at least AED 4,000, or AED 3,000 with employer-provided housing, plus suitable accommodation (ICP). Family permits cannot last longer than the sponsor's own permit.
Under the general rule, a residence visa is nullified automatically after more than 180 continuous days outside the UAE, with listed exceptions (u.ae). Golden Visa holders are treated differently. If you expect long absences, plan the route with this in mind.
No. Banks run their own compliance review of the company and the owner, looking at the activity, source of funds and clients. Prepare contracts, invoices and statements from existing accounts before applying.
No. A free zone partner visa is sponsored by the company under the free zone's rules. Green Residency for investors and partners is a federal five-year, self-sponsored permit for which the investment and approvals are assessed separately (ICP).
